Bedtime Stories (2008)

Bedtime Stories (2008)

The critics hated Bedtime Stories but the kids loved it. Based on the laugh-O-meter at the theatres, this Disney holiday family movie is guaranteed to be one of the more funny movies for 2008. Apart from Sandler's top notched comic antics, the running gag about a hamster called "Bugsie" should also keep the children in stitches.

The up and coming talented British comedian, Russell Brand, who plays Adam Sandler's best friend, also provides lots of laughter whenever he is on screen. He is a sort of cross between Mr Bean and Borat.

The fantasy sequences - full of chivalrous knights, honorable cowboys, and slimy space monsters are also fun to watch.

Bedtime Stories 2008 movie reviewThere movie has lots of good motivational themes like "don't stop believing" and "do unto others". It is also refreshing to see screen kids behaving like children rather than miniature adults with bad habits. This first time collaboration between Adam Sandler and Disney shows a more sensitive side of Sandler.

The story centers on a handyman (Adam Sandler) who works for a Howard Hughes like hotel magnate who had promised Adam's father that one day Sandler would be given an opportunity to run the hotel. However, reality sets in when he finds a rival who has worm his way into the heart of the magnate's daughter. One day, he finds that creating bedtime stories crafted to outcomes he wants can help him achieve his dreams. However, these wish-fulfillment dreams comes at a cost and he must marshall all his human resources in order to actualize his dreams.

There movie also manages to tell a heartwarming love story without any sex - just like in the old days of black and white films. Using just a little light kissing to add emotional depth to the story.

However, don't expect one and a half hours of harmless fun. Though Adam Sandler has toned down his usually offensive humor, there is a tinge of subtle rude humor here and there. It is in the form of some over the top humor and offensive site gags. Adam Sandler character's rude behavior to a rather helpful lady is not the type of behavior parents would like to see in their children.

Bedtime Stories is suitable for children with some reservations:

Bedtime Stories is rated PG for some mild rude humor and mild language although this is a Disney movie. While Bedtime Stories is a wholesome family movie for their kids with hardly any cursing and sex scenes, there are some minor parts of the movie which parents may find disturbing. There's references to "passing wind", "buttkiss", "kissing everyone's butt" and at least one "Oh my G**" and another "They were killing my head, I swear to God!".

There is derogatory references to people who are midgets or are overweight. There is also a Paris Hilton "party-girl" character who "gets around with lots of guys". There are also scenes of women in low cut dresses showing lots of cleavage.

Some young children may be disturbed by the fact that the two lead children are wondering if they will ever see their missing dad again. He has apparently left them for another woman. There are also comments such as “don't worry, we won't tell your parents,” which promotes keeping secrets from your family and breaking the rules.

I am looking forward to getting the Bedtime Stories on DVD and catch the gags I missed the first time round. Those who like good classic 80s pop music, will like the movie soundtrack (though the songs are not released on the original soundtrack audio CD). Songs featured include Journey's Don't Stop Believing, Springsteen's I'm on Fire, Pointers' Fire and Trammps' Disco Inferno.

Babylon A.D. (2008)

Babylon A.D. (2008)

Not a bad action movie in spite of the disagreements between the studio and the French director, Mathieu Kassovitz, and actor Vin Diesel over how the movie had been produced. Pity many people gave Babylon A.D. a miss because of the bad press. Not Shakespeare, but Terminator fans will enjoy this fast paced movie.

Babylon A.D. (2008) movie review & DVD posterVin plays an exiled American mercenary who is paid to smuggle a genetically manipulated girl (who may be carrying a dangerous virus) from Russia to the USA. Along the way, he meets resistance with various cult and military groups intent on stopping him from delivering his "package". This apocalyptic tale set in our near future has similarities, though not as dark, as the earlier "Children of Men" film.

If you have missed the Babylon A.D., catch it on DVD or Blu-ray when it is available.

Actors: Vin Diesel , Mélanie Thierry, Michelle Yeoh, Charlotte Rampling, Gérard Depardieu
Director: Mathieu Kassovitz
Writers: Eric Besnard (writer) Maurice G. Dantec (novel)
Genre: Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller
Rating: Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, language and some sexuality.

Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)

Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)

This Lost Boys: The Tribe sequel did not fare as well as its 1998 cult favorite predecessor - which is a shame as this straight to video reincarnation deserved better. While the gory scenes are pretty good, poor scripting, bad acting and the lack of fun in this movie makes it a poor cousin of the earlier movie.

Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008) movie review & DVD posterLost Boys: The Tribe is about a brother and sister who moves to Luna Bay, California and the sister is seduced by the leader of a pack of vampire surfers. Brother gets himself infected by the vampire strain so he can prevent his sister from turning completely into a vampire. Unlike other vampire movies, it seems that it is easier to get a cure from the vampire's bite in this movie.

Lost Boys: The Tribe is a standby movie in case you don't have any suitable movie to watch in your free time.

Actors: Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, Jamison Newlander, Autumn Reeser, Tad Hilgenbrink
Directors: P.J. Pesce
Writers: Janice Fischer
Studio: Warner Home Video
Run Time: 94 minutes
Genre: Comedy | Horror | Thriller
Rating: Rated R for strong vampire violence and gore, language, sexuality and some drug use.

Felon (2008)

Felon (2008)

Probably one of the more memorable prison movies. Forget the "Prison" TV series with its unrealistic scenarios, "Felon" is the real world about prisoner abuse which leads to harden criminals joining race-based gangs in order to survive predators in prisons.

Felon(2008) movie review & DVD posterFelon probably took its inspiration from an actual event that happened in the Corcoran state prison in California around 1989 and 1995 in which prison guards (the controversial Security Housing Unit SHU) conditioned inmates to fight each other so as to assert control over them.

Very good performances by Stephen Dorff as an man sent to prison unjustly and Val Kilmer as a Charles Manson-like character. The fight scenes are superb as it is shocking. If you liked "Fight Club", you will probably enjoy this movie as well.

Felon is Rated R for brutal violence, pervasive language and brief nudity

Actors: Anne Archer, Nick Chinlund, Stephen Dorff, Val Kilmer, Sam Shepard
Directors: Ric Roman Waugh
Studio: Sony Pictures
Run Time: 104 minutes
Genre: Crime, Drama

Ruins (2008)

Ruins (2008)

If you liked "Turistas", you would like this terror ride through South American jungles. Ruins, however, is more a creature horror movie than torture flick. This distinction does not stop Ruins from having gore that is relentless as it is realistic; and should please blood thirsty fans to no end.

Ruins(2008) movie review & DVD poster"Ruins" is Rated R for strong violence and gruesome images, language, some sexuality and nudity.

The movie is about a group of friends who get stranded on an isolated ancient Mayan ruin which is home to a 1,000 year old carnivorous plant-like being. The movie is based on a best selling book of the same name by Scott Smith. This movie proves that the world is a more dangerous place than it seems. Terrorists are the least of your worries.

Though Ruins has not done very well at the box office, this should not stop you from renting this movie - if you are a self-respecting horror / sci-fi fan.

Actors: Shawn Ashmore, Jena Malone, Jonathan Tucker, Laura Ramsey, Joe Anderson
Directors: Carter Smith
Writers: Scott B. Smith
Studio: DreamWorks SKG
Genre: Horror, Sci-fi

Wall-E (2008)

Wall-E (2008)

Wall-E is a hard science fable about how unbridled capitalism and the disregard of the environment can destroy our planet earth. Wall-E is not a movie that will appeal to very young children because of its serious overall tone and subject matter - which tends to be bleak.

Wall-E (2008) movie review & DVD posterIt is probably a film that will appeal to adults who like serious hard science fiction though the movie is good for kids to see as it educates them about being responsible to the environment.

The story is set in the future where there are no humans. Only one WALL•E (a Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) robot appears to have survived on earth and it has developed human like qualities through centuries of exposure to human works of art and invention. The arrival of another robot EVE (Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) sets off a chain of events leading to Wall-E's entry to the mother ship that left earth 700 years earlier due to environmental destruction. The gigantic spaceship is now inhabited be horribly obese humans who have never walked in their lives due to their shrunken skeletal frame and the weightless of the space environment.

At the heart of the movie is a love story between Wall-e and Eve which is touching and invigorating. The characters are well-developed even though the two main characters do not say a word in intelligible English. What you get from them is bot-talk. Somehow, Wall-e reminds me of Speilberg's ET creature.

Wall-E is suitable for 6+ children

Children may find Wall-E the robot "cute" if they like R2D2 but don't expect silly kids humor in the movie. In fact, the film's G-Rating does not stop this Disney movie from being scary in parts with explosions, evil robots, cockroaches and scary dark sets. Some of the science talk may be hard for some of the young ones to understand.

Pixar has pulled out the stops in the cutting edge CGI when creating this highly innovative movie. If you like good CGI, Wall-E is the film not to be missed.

Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army (2008)

Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army (2008)

Hellboy 2 is one of the most irritating superhero ever created beating Hancock and Iron Man by a wide margin. Do we really care if he lives or die? Not really.

If Hellboy is not drunk or behaving badly, we are subjected to some of the most unbelievable action sequences ever seen to-date - like throwing a baby high into the air without hurting it. If this is the future of superhero movies, then this genre is doomed to failure much the same way as spaghetti westerns have marginalized Western genre movies.

Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army(2008) movie review & DVD posterOscar winning director, Guillermo Del Toro's inventive CGI creature effects and imaginative action sequences on this Hellboy sequel can't mask how devoid of good ideas this movie is.

In this movie, all hell breaks loose when a prince of an ancient race is revived and are bent on annihilating every last human being on earth. My only wish is that he sent Hellboy back to hell where he belongs and leave the rest of us humans alone.

Genre: Action/Adventure
Starring: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Luke Goss
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Screenwriter: Guillermo Del Toro
Story: Guillermo Del Toro, Mike Mignola
Runtime: 110 minutes
Studio: Universal Pictures

Hellboy II The Golden Army is not really suitable for children

Hellboy II The Golden Army
is rated PG13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and some language.

Some parts of the movie may not be suitable for young children (below 13) because of its scary creatures and frightening violent scenes. In one scene, a key character commits suicide with a knife. You also have bad language, references to inter species relationship, non-marital cohabitation, same sex marriage, scenes of a drunk Hellboy and generally bad attitudes for a hero.

Rails and Ties (2007)

Rails and Ties (2007)

Panned by critics, Rails and Ties deserves a more positive review for its DVD release. This weepie may come across too forced and melodramatic at times but it does deliver an interesting story about the tragedy of death and loneliness.

Rails and Ties (2007) movie review & DVD posterStrong performance by Kevin Bacon and Marcia Gay Harden manages to lift the movie above the script's limitations.

Rails and Ties is about a detached Tim (Kevin Bacon) whose train ploughed though Davey's (Miles Heizer) mother's car which was parked deliberately on the railway tracks. When Davey visits Tim's house to demand why Tim did not stop the train and avoid killing his mom, he develops an unexpected mother-son relationship with Tim's cancer ridden wife, Megan (Marcia Gay Harden).

The movie is directed by Alison Eastwood (Clint Eastwood's daughter).

Genre: Dramas
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Marcia Gay Harden, Miles Heizer
Director: Alison Eastwood
Screenwriter: Micky Levy
Runtime: 1 hr 41 mins

Rails and Ties (2007 is rated: PG-13 for mature thematic elements, an accident scene, brief nudity and momentary strong language.

Cassandra's Dream (2008)

Cassandra's Dream (2008)

Not one of Woody Allen's best (written and directed) movies but it is reasonably entertaining if you like Hitchcock's more quirky melodramas. Cassandra's Dream is largely saved by the talented British actors, Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor who play two working class brothers with aspirations for the high life.

Cassandra's Dream (2008) movie review & DVD posterColin and Ewan have problems paying off their gambling debts until they meet a rich uncle who proposes they murder a business associate of his in return for a considerable sum of money. Cassandra's Dream turns out to be a nightmare for them and proves that committing a murder is not as easy as it seems.

Cassandra's Dream is rated: PG-13 for thematic elements, some sexual material and brief violence.

Genre: Drama
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Tom Wilkinson, Sally Hawkins, Hayley Atwell
Director: Woody Allen
Screenwriter: Woody Allen
Runtime: 1 hr 48 mins

Wieners (2007)

Wieners (2007)

Another teen road trip movie with no redeeming qualities. It is no surprise Wieners has flopped in the theaters and will do likewise on video.

Wieners(2007) movie review & DVD posterKenan Thompson, Zachary Levi and Fran Kranz stars as three childhood friends who intend to take their home made wiener wagon on a cross-country road trip to seek revenge against the pompous television "doctor" who humiliated them on national television. During the trip they predictably meet an assortment of freaks, weirdos, and losers.

Comedy is limited to crude and silly jokes that won't see the light of day in any decent movie. Fortunately, this one will die at the first installment unlike the equally reviled National Lampoon and American Pie sequels.

Wieners (2007) is rated: R for crude and sexual humor, nudity and language.

First Snow (2007)

First Snow (2007)

First Snow is a slow, moody drama about a salesman who gets a prediction from a local palm reader of his own death when the first snow falls.

First Snow (2007) movie review & DVD posterGuy Pierce, the smooth talking salesman who can get out of any situation, becomes more withdrawn as the prospect of the first snow fall gets dreadfully close. Is he predestined to his fate or can he change it?

First Snow is rated: R for language, some violence and sexuality.

The Signal (2007)

The Signal (2007)

A zombie film about mysterious signals that are transmitted from all electronic devices which turn people to psychotic bloodthirsty killers. Because it is a low budget film, many of the horror / special effects are off screen. Still, there is enough gore to satisfy even the more demanding horror fans. If you looking for something new by way of the horror genre, this movie to check out.

The Signal(2007) movie review & DVD posterThe Signal is a sort of experimental film with three Atlanta filmmakers Jacob Gentry, Dan Bush, and David Bruckner write and direct one of three parts with a Re-animator influenced finale. The non-linear storytelling can be confusing at time but The Signal is never boring. It is the type of movie that will never fail to grab your attention even if you're doing something else and half watching the movie.

The Signal stars a cast of unknowns which helps lend some realism to the movie: Anessa Ramsey, Sahr, AJ Bowen, Matt Stanton and Suehyla El-Attar and is written and directed by David Bruckner, Jacob Gentry and Dan Bush.

The Signal is rated R for strong brutal bloody violence throughout, pervasive language and brief nudity

Step Up 2 - The Streets (2008)

Step Up 2 - The Streets (2008)

While Step Up was about kids wanting to study dance in a stuffy Arts School, Step Up 2 is about kids wanting to quit school and go to the streets. What a future is ahead for them!

Step Up - The Streets(2008) movie review & DVD posterStep Up 2 - The Streets tries very hard to be all the urban dance movies that was ever made since the '70s but ended up looking like an MTV montage without any really memorable music to go with it.

It must be admitted that the dances are probably a good record of what was hip in 2008 but that is about all it has going for it. Don't expect good acting or a decent storyline. If you just go and see it for the dancing, you'll be fine though.

Step Up 2 - The Streets is rated: PG-13 for language, some suggestive material and brief violence.

Redline (2003)

Redline (2003)

Redline is all about flashy cars, illegal car racing down public roads and gambling. It is no surprise the movie bears some resemblance to Too Fast Too Furious as it shares the same executive producer, Daniel Sadek. That is where the similarities end. Unlike Too Fast Too Furious, Redline is full of stereotypes, stupid dialog and an unbelievable plot.

Redline(2003) movie review & DVD posterThis vanity project looks like it was created to show off Daniel Sadek's fleet of million-dollar Ferraris and Lamborghinis. This movie is only for those who can't get enough of speeding cars and car wreaks. People don't get killed in car wreaks in this movie unless it is to advance the plot.

There is however some great guitarists providing fantastic licks in the movie.

Watch it highly disposable movie at your own risk.

Redline is rated: PG-13 for violence, illegal and reckless behavior, sexual content, language and drug references.

Dragon Wars (2007)

Dragon Wars (2007)

Except for the fairly good creature CGI effects, Dragon Wars (or D-War) is highly forgettable and even bad movie. The script simply atrocious with a storyline that makes no sense and dialog which looks like it had been translated literally from another language.

Dragon Wars (D-War)(2008) movie review & DVD posterThe story is about a boy who is given a medal which gives him powers to fight the Buraki monsters from ancient Korea. These time traveling Buraki monsters, who can transform themselves from serpents to dragons and back to serpents, wreak havoc on today's cities.

Dragon Wars is by Korean director Hyung Rae Shim (REPTILIAN) stars Jason Behr (Skinwalkers), Robert Forster (Firewall) and Amanda Brooks.

Dragon Wars is rated: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and creature action.

Untraceable (2008)

Untraceable (2008)

An above average thriller with a familiar plot about an FBI cybercrime specialist (Diane Lane) tracking a serial killer who does live postings of his killings over the Internet.

Untraceable(2008) movie review & DVD posterDon't expect Untraceable to be terribly suspenseful as the identity of the killer is revealed too early in the movie. However, a few of the terror scenes may satisfy some gore / torture fans.

Diane Lane puts up a good performance as the FBI agent desperately fighting against time to find the killer though her resemblance to Jodie Foster's Silence of the Lambs character may work against it.

Untraceable is rated: R for some prolonged sequences of strong gruesome violence, and language.

Funny Games (2007)

Funny Games (2007)

A carbon copy of the nihilistic 1997 Austrian film of the same name and just as equally difficult to watch.

FFunny Games(2007) movie review & DVD posterunny Games is about two young men who terrorize a family on vacation.

Their games are simply too excruciatingly difficult to watch. Don't expect "Hostel" type horror / gore here. Watch this movie only if you want to be tortured (read as: irritated) for 1 hour 52 minutes. If you had walked away before the movie had ended, you would have been spared of its low key anti-climatic finale. You have been warned, enter the theater at your own risk!

Naomi Watts stars as one of the victims.

Funny Games is rated: R for terror, violence and some language.

Boarding Gate (2007)

Boarding Gate (2007)

Advertised as an erotic thriller about sex, murder, betrayal and money, Boarding Gate instead turns out to be incredibly boring.

Boarding Gate (2007)) movie review & DVD posterThe movie is populated with characters nobody cares about. Its international backdrop fails to disguise the fact that it is more a B Movie than the "serious" Art House movie it aspires to be.

The story too is pretty trite, about of a former prostitute (Asia Argento) with complicated past sexual relationships with both men and women. She moves from London to Paris and then to Hong Kong to get away from her past misdeeds. At her final destination, she gets involved in a blotched drug deal with dire consequences.

Don't go to this movie expecting anything remotely exciting.

Boarding Gate is rated R for violence, sexual content, language and some drug material.

Evening (2007)

Evening (2007)

To an average viewer, Evening is a dreadfully boring romantic drama with a complicated storyline that gets nowhere.

Evening (2008) movie review & DVD posterHowever, fans of the much loved novel by Susan Minot and adapted for the screen by Minot and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham (The Hours), may enjoy this cinematic adaptation. Don't expect a successful recreation of the book even with the author on board.

Evening stars big names such as Claire Danes, Vanessa Redgrave, Natasha Richardson, and Meryl Streep.

Evening is rated: PG-13 for some thematic elements, sexual material, a brief accident scene and language

© http://goingtomovies.blogspot.com - Evening (2007)

The Eye (2008)

The Eye (2008)

Rather unexciting supernatural movie based on the Singapore-Hong Kong horror flick by the Pang Brothers also named "The Eye", stars Jessica Alba as the blind girl who can see dead people when her eyesight has been restored through surgery.

The Eye(2008) movie review & DVD posterWhile the original movie is creepy and atmospheric, this remake is predictable Hollywood horror fare and therefore does deliver the necessary jolts to make it memorable. The Eye tries hard to up the ante on the "Sixth Sense" I see dead people... but here again the makers fail to understand the dynamics of what made this low key horror movie a success. Sorry, back to the drawing board....

The Eye is rated: PG-13 for violence/terror and disturbing content.

The Take (2008)

The Take (2008)

This drama is about an armored-truck driver's hunt for a corrupt security guard who gunned him down starring John Leguizamo.

The Take (2008) movie review & DVD posterLike most independent films, "The Take" is dark and bleak at times, but it does offer hope in the human spirit. If you like independent films, then you'll probably want to check out "The Take".

The Take is rated R for violence, sexual content, language and some drug use.

August Rush (2007)

It requires considerable concentration to get into this movie and some parts slows to a crawl. August Rush is mish mash of several genres like the musical, romantic drama etc but does not succeed in any of them.

August Rush (2008) movie review & DVD posterAugust Rush is about a musically talented parents reconnecting with their long lost son who is also similarly musically inclined. Stars Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys-Meyer.

August Rush is rated PG-13 for some thematic elements, mild violence and language.

My Mom's New Boyfriend (2008)

My Mom's New Boyfriend (2008)

The movie did not do well in the theaters and we can see why. My Mom's New Boyfriend is incoherent and offensive to fat people. Laughs in "My Mom's New Boyfriend' are virtually nonexistent so you're left feeling sorry for everyone involved in the movie.

My Mom's New Boyfriend (2008) movie review & DVD posterThe movie does have some very good actors like Antonio Banderas (as the art thief) and Meg Ryan (as the fat mom who turn into a really hot single mom). Colin Hanks (Tom Hank's son) is miscast as the hot mom's FBI son who unwittingly becomes party to covert operation to wire tap his mom's every activity so he can get enough evidence to send his mom's boyfriend (an art thief)to jail.

My Mom's New Boyfriend is rated PG-13 for sexual content, language, some violence and drug material.

Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

The Spiderwick Chronicles is as unimpressive in its story telling and special effects as that of the Golden Compass. The characters too are so detached that it is difficult relate to them. This first installment does not bode well for the future of Spiderwick movie franchise.

Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) movie & DVD review posterThe story, based on the bestselling series of children's fantasy novels by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, is about a family which relocates from New York to the remote New England woods which is teeming with ugly creatures like goblins, boggarts, and ogres. It should have made an exciting tale if not for the poor scripting and bad acting.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is rated PG for scary creature action and violence, peril and some thematic elements. The scary monsters may frighten children too young to differentiate film fantasy from reality. There is one instance of very mild profanity and one other, more serious utterance that gets cut off mid-word.

Semi-Pro (2008)

Semi-Pro (2008)

Semi-Pro is another typical movie whereby Will Ferrel is given an opportunity to strut his macho wet dreams stuff. This time he is an entertainer / coach / basketball player with an afro trying to take the team's game to a higher level and not succeeding. It is only when Woody Harrelson takes over the reigns of the team, does the players see some real sports success.

Semi-Pro (2008) movie / dvd posterNot one of Will Ferrel's best movies. But not a bad movie if you can tolerate some really crass jokes.

People who love '70s disco music will enjoy the movie purely because the music is lovingly woven into the movie much like Boogie Nights. So boogie on down and get down tonight with this DVD. If anything, just enjoy the Semi-Pro music soundtrack and reminisce the days when things were not so complicated.

Semi-Pro is rated R for language and some sexual content.

Be Kind Rewind (2008)

Be Kind Rewind (2008)

A low key comedy about a group of movie makers trying to save a building from demolition. Jack Black does his darn best to be funny but this low budget movie is so unfunny and looks like it is on the verge of running out of steam throughout the movie.

Be Kind Rewind(2008) movie & DVD review posterThe characters does not gel and the audience will have great difficulty identifying with any of them. It is not likely to do well with the young crowd.

Watch Be Kind Rewind only if you don't have anything better to do.

Be Kind Rewind is rated: PG-13 for some sexual references.

Onion Movie (2008)

Onion Movie (2008)

The Onion Movie pokes fun at the people involved in a news channel network and the nonsensical stories it generates on a daily basis.

The Onion Movie(2008) movie & DVD review posterIt is funny in parts but won't rate as a hilarious movie because many of the jokes are predictable. It depicts stereotypes of Arabs, Blacks, Britney Spears, homosexuals, corporate executives, etc, so you can expect some of the jokes to be pretty disgusting. It is a pity the Onion Movie was not made after the Clinton / Obama Nomination Campaign as they would then have had a goldmine of material to manipulate.

One suspects that the Onion Movie, by its very nature, won't be fondly remembered as the jokes will feel dated after a few years. So enjoy it while the subject matter is still newsworthy.

Andromeda Strain Miniseries (2008)

Andromeda Strain Miniseries (2008)

Even the creative talents of director Mikael Salomon (BAND OF BROTHERS)and producer Ridley Scott could not beat the original 1971 Andromeda Strain movie. This Michael Crichton (JURASSIC PARK)book adaptation was too draggy at 2 hrs 57 minutes. Also this sci-fi thriller lacked the much anticipated CGI /special effects even for a TV movie.

Andromeda Strain Miniseries(2008) movie & DVD review poster The story about a satellite bringing to earth a extraterrestrial virus (the Andromeda Strain) has been exploited in many movies since 1971, but this 2008 production fails to bring the necessary thrills to make it a memorable miniseries.

Only to be seen for its curiosity value.

George A Romero's Dairy of the Dead (2008)

George A Romero's Diary of the Dead (2008)

George A Romero's feeble attempt at a Blair Witch concept video of the undead. Romero is not the most creative of producers / directors in Hollywood, but the Diary of the Dead has an even lower standard than his previous Dead / zombie movies.

George A Romero's Diary of the Dead(2008) movie & DVD review poster Something went wrong in the production of Diary of the Dead, perhaps it was the lack of budget even for a low budget movie, resulting in this resulting mess. Watch it only if you are a George A Romero fan. Otherwise, give it a miss.

Diary of the Dead is rated: R for strong horror violence and gore, and pervasive language.

In Bruges (2008)

In Bruges (2008)

In Bruges has got all the elements of a good movie. Intelligent script, good direction and lots of depth in the acting department. It has a good mixture of innovative action sequences, comic situations and roller coaster plot. In Bruges is written and directed by the talented awards winning British director, Martin McDonagh

In Bruges 2008 movie DVD posterThe story revolves around Ray (Colin Ferrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) - two British hit men hiding out in Bruges, Belgium. To Ray, Bruges is like hell while Ken is enjoying his all too brief sojourn there. However, Ray blotches up on what should have been an easy hit job in Bruges and things start to go terribly wrong and their friendship is severely tested.

Ralph Fiennes plays the equally ruthless London mobster boss

It is one of the few movies that will keep you glued to seat from start to finish as is somewhat reminiscent to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction in its thematic feel.

In Burges is rated R for strong bloody violence, pervasive language and some drug use and therefore is not suitable for children.

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

To say that the Boleyn Girls shaped the political landscape of Europe is an understatement. The ambitious but flawed Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman) was instrumental in the formation of the Anglican Church of England, the makings of a great serial queen killer as well as the development of the insular England into a superpower through her daughter, Queen Elizabeth I.

The other Boleyn Girl 2008 movie DVD posterWith the help of her scheming father and uncle, she sought to become the Queen of England by marrying the already married King Henry VIII (Eric Bana) in the then Catholic England. Unfortunately, all their plans have come to naught and none of them benefited from this pivotal point in history. In fact, many of them lost their heads literally!

The Other Boleyn Girl is an insider's look into the intrigue of the tragic Boleyn story of lust for power. If you liked the movie "Elizabeth", you would want to see this companion piece of Tudor history based on the best selling novel by Philippa Gregory.

The Other Boleyn Girl is rated:PG-13 for mature thematic elements, sexual content and some violent images and not suitable for children.

Hancock (2008)

Hancock (2008)

Will Smith gives a convincing performance as Hancock - a self-hating lonely guy who does not know much about his past, looks like a bum, is an alcoholic and has anger management problems.

Hancock 2008 movie DVD posterHe has chalked up tens of millions of damage because of his couldn't-care-less attitude when using his superpowers. This does not endear him with the people of Los Angeles who demand that he be put in prison for the destruction of numerous properties.

Fed up with his current situation, Hancock agrees to an Image Consultant, Ray Embrey's (Jason Bateman) plan to go to prison so that the public will realize how much they need him. During his time in prison, he learns to handle his problems and turn a new leaf.

The second half of the movie slows down a bit as our funny superhero becomes a serious and more conscientious superhero. But tragedy awaits him when he learns about his past and the source of his superpowers. Like all superheroes, there is a duality in the nature of their superpowers and this can be exploited to destroy them.

Hancock is not a bad movie though it is not really a classic superhero movie. Like Batman, Hancock deals with people, not monsters and superhuman beings.

It questions the feasibility of a superhero being a sort of demi-god, perfect in every aspect of their lives without any moral or emotional shortcomings. In a way, Hancock is an analogy of the USA - a nation that does much good but is largely unappreciated because of some failings in its moral compass.

As a whole, the CGI and special effects are good though we wonder if a better film has been left on the cutting floor as it has been reported that Director Peter Berg had cut many scenes which could have made Hancock a more coherent movie including an exciting CGI heavy fight scene.

Hancock is the new age superhero - imperfect, sensitive and dealing with real human problems.

Hancock is Not Suitable for Young Children:
The movie is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action and violence and language. The film was given the R Rating twice before because of its statutory rape scene and several scenes of severe alcoholic abuse. So it not surprising this film looks more like an adult orientated movie than a film made with children in mind. So its PG-13 rating is right on the money - this film is suitable only for children 13 years and above.

As can be expected in action movies, there is a lot of violence though very little blood is shown. There is also more than a few obscenities and sex jokes including one in which the superhero literally puts one bad guy up another bad guy's ass. The hero also drinks more than he should, teaches kids how to hurt other kids and other bad attitudes. So he is not exactly an ideal role model for kids.

Genre: Action/Adventure
Starring: Will Smith, Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron, Eddie Marsan
Director: Peter Berg
Screenwriter: Vy Vincent Ngo, Vince Gilligan
Producer: Akiva Goldsman, Michael Mann, Will Smith, James Lassiter
Studio: Columbia Pictures

Meet the Spartans (2008)

Meet the Spartans (2008)

An over the top spoof movie that parodies many of today's movies particularly "300" If you loved "Scary Movie" and "Epic Movie", you will probably love this movie as well. Meet the Spartans is hilarious and sometimes vulgar but always delivers the laughs consistently. The comedy may be low brow but if it is enjoyable, what the heck.

Meet the Spartans 2008 movie DVD posterIt pokes fun of many celebrities including the American Idol judges, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and even Ugly Betty.

Meet the Spartans is not suitable for children even though it is rated PG-13 because of it crude and sexual content throughout, language and some comic violence. This includes gross-out humor, gratuitous amount of bodily fluids, some sexual innuendo, and homosexuality sight jokes. Watch out for the musical finale as the credits start to roll: the deleted scenes prove to be some of the most amusing in the film.

27 Dresses (2008)

27 Dresses (2008)

A very entertaining movie about a woman who is always the bridesmaid but never the bride, someone who has spent all her life trying to make other people happy. It is a tender and funny movie starring Katherine Heigl and ably directed by Anne Fletcher. If you like movies about secret love and unexpected happy endings, see this movie. 27 Dresses is a very upbeat date movie that is not too sentimental and will make you cry, laugh and get angry all at the same time. It also features a very good soundtrack right through the final credits.

27 Dresses 2008 movie DVD poster27 Dresses did not do exceptionally well at the box office but that should not deter you from catching the movie on DVD. It is better than most of the drama / comedy movies released this quarter - so don't miss it.

The film is rated PG-13 for language, some innuendo and sexuality and is not suitable for young children.

Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (2008)

Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (2008)

This movie is exciting, though at times, not entirely believable. This new version of Journey to the Center of the Earth is set in the present time with the Jules Verne book forming the "research" for a new adventure. Science professor (Brenden Fraser takes us on a journey to the center of the unseen earth where we meet translucent birds, man eating plants, prehistoric monsters and other never before seen creatures and lands in the underworld.

journey to the center of the earth 3D (2008) movie DVD posterThe film is directed by Academy Award-winning visual effects veteran Eric Brevig (Total Recall, Pearl Harbor) and features a Digital 3D experience which is the star attraction of the movie. Some of the sets are impressive - like the levitating boulders and the lake at the center of the earth sequence.

If you are in the mood for a good adventure movie, you will like this fast paced yarn. Don't forget to bring along your kids. They will have a good time at the movie too.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is suitable for children:

Journey to the Center of the Earth is rated PG for intense adventure action and some scary moments, including people falling into deep, dark pits, being chased by a tyrannosaurs rex, being attacked by scary prehistoric flesh eating flying fish, and being attacked by carnivorous venus fly-trap type plants. Generally, the movie should be suitable for children as the film does not go out of its way to be horrifyingly scary though those watching the movie in 3D may be startled by pop-out objects.

Genre: Action/Adventure
Starring: Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, Anita Briem
Director: Eric Brevig
Screenwriter: Michael Weiss, Jennifer Flackett, Mark Levin
Runtime: 89 mins

The Happening (2008)

The Happening (2008)

Another boring thriller / horror movie from M Night Shyamalan. Only God knows why he continues to make "intelligent" movies that is devoid of any excitement whatsoever. After his reasonable good first two movies, Night has gone into an auto movie making mode churning the same type of movies that unfortunately has become his trademark.

The Happening 2008 movie DVD posterThe Happening retreads the basic scenario of the world gone mad with a kind of virus which makes people commit suicide for no apparent reason. This time the cause of the virus attack is some kind of plant neuro-toxins. In the hands of a competent director, the Happening could have gone somewhere. Unfortunately, Shyamalan, the ending is obvious and disappointing. Even actor, Mark Wahlberg can't save this movie from snoozeland.

Fans of the genre may get to see a little gore sporadically. Other than that it is a non-happening. Disappointing, disappointing, disappointing.

This movie may not be suitable for children because of the sometimes graphic suicide scenes and language.

Best DVD Rentals in Singapore

Best Bluray DVD Rentals in Singapore

The Bluray DVD rental business in Singapore is a very competitive one. So it is no surprise that many Bluray DVD rental companies have come and gone. High shop rentals and high manpower costs plus competing digital video delivery systems (not to mention illegal movie downloads) are the key factors which can make or break a company in this business. Companies must either have very deep pockets or operate at very low costs. Mom and Pop stores or large chain stores benefit most from this business model.

Although the liberalized movie censorship laws (since 2006) have resulted in more DVD titles being available in the market, Singapore entrepreneurs need to be very nimble footed to capitalize and profit from this saturated and often rather low margin business.

It is sad that one of the most famous video rental companies in Singapore have closed down last year. The late Albert O'Dell - the father of the video rentals in Singapore - started D&O Film & Video in Orchard in the late '70s (I think). He offered lots of obscure titles on video tapes (many edited titles, as Singapore's movie censorship laws were stricter back then) back in the '80s. His rentals were not cheap then at S$7 a pop but he was such a friendly and knowledgeable guy, that you didn't mind coughing up the cash. Unfortunately, when he died in 2006 (of a heart attack), his son had taken over an already dying business as video tapes were rapidly becoming obsolete and they did not want aggressively to switch over to the newer and more higher demand (and competitive) digital formats.
Other notable video libraries which have exited the business include Kwang Sia, the D'Laser Group, Now Discs, Video Village, HongKong Video etc. A few are still around but well past their prime like Rida Video and a relatively newcomer - 7 Frames Video (provides home deliveries but not online service).

This is the danger of the video rental business. Video formats become obsolete within 10 years or less. Video technology has changed tremendously since the '60s starting with 8mm / Super8 films, to Betamax / VHS, Laser Discs, and now HD DVD (already in its death bed) /Blu Ray. In 2010, 3D Bluray was unleashed into the market, adding another format into the market. It remains to be seen how long Blu Ray will last as a new Hi Def format is already in development. It is likely that future formats will be in soft formats like USB card formats or even download formats much like what we see from iTunes or Amazon.

Knowing Sony, the king of dead formats - this is going to be another one that bites the dust in a few short years - so don't invest too heavily in Blu Ray disks. For the next round of format wars, it is likely that companies from India and China will be heavily involved and it will be harder for Sony to dominate the market with its more higher priced and limited products.
Investments in stocks (videos) are very expensive and can easily eat up limited capital and affect companies' cash flow if they are not trimmed regularly when demand falls off.

In spite of this, video rentals will still be with us for a long time as online downloaded movies are transitory formats and generally of lower quality than disks - not mentioning restrictions on their use over different devices like smart phones, tablet devices and God knows that else manufacturers want to unload onto us gullible consumers. Moreover, people love physical products especially products which has attached memories of the good times experienced by the consumers.

Below are some of my favorite video rental companies that rent DVDs in Singapore. I have not included video libraries offering mainly VCDs or Asian TV series.
Gramophone

Have branches throughout Singapore and unique titles vary from store to the store. The best stores with unique titles* are at Holland Village and Takashimaya. Gramophone's DVD rental rates are the lowest in the island - currently at S$30 per month unlimited rentals 3 DVDs at any one time which can work out as low as 40 cents per disc assuming you have the time and assuming they have 90 titles for you to watch in 30 days and assuming you can return all your rented discs everyday.
After you rent DVDs from Gramaphone for one month, you will be left with little choices by way of unique titles as they seem to reserve the new batch of unique titles to their newly launched stores. So the smart renter have to check out Gramophone's newer stores for the harder to find titles.
*NOTE: Unique titles refers to movie titles that are generally available from other video rental companies here.
It is harder to check out their catalog as Gramophone's DVDs are stripped from their boxes and stored in plastic folders which in turn are put into standard plastic files. You can get a backache bending down to retrieve the files at the lower shelves which are virtually at floor level. Not very user friendly but it makes business sense to compact their collections into files to save space and therefore reduce their storage space and ultimately shop rental costs.

They buy used DVDs from customers at around $10 per DVD - most of which are added to their rental collection.

Video EZY

Australian video chain, Video EZY, also have branches throughout Singapore. The rentals are about S$3 per title and new titles are easily available throughout their branches. DVDs are stored in their original boxes and are easy to browse. They unfortunately, don't have much unique titles which makes them no different from many other DVD rental companies and this could possibly affect their long term viability.
They rent Blu-ray discs at $9.
Digisoft.tv recently announced that they plan to set up in-store kiosks at Video EZY to offer quality movie downloads for mobile devices. Don't see how this is going to succeed as there are many software that can make downloads from DVDs for mobile devices.

Canton Video
Another old timer which has upgraded their services recently. Canton Video now have Blu-Ray discs for rental. They also have quite a good range of unique titles which you should check out. They offer a coupon (they call it "Credits") system ranging from $3 to $4. One credit = 1 DVD rental. Canton Video's flagship store is in Valley Point at River Valley Road.

Digit Media

An undeservedly lesser known mom-and-pop DVD library along Tanjong Katong Road with a good collection of unique recently released titles. Digit Media rentals are affordable at about S$3 plus per disk and there are no shortage of new titles to borrow with each visit. Titles are easy to browse and the owners are friendly and knowledgeable of the DVDs they stock.
They starting blu-ray rentals in May 2010.
Disadvantage: they don't rent the titles with the original DVD boxes. This makes sense as they do sell some of their older titles to get newer ones. This may sometimes result in you borrowing a previously borrowed disc as you can't remember the box cover. But that is not a problem, because Digit Media will let you substitute the title with another if their records show that you have rented the title from them before. Of course, you will have to return the disc by the next day to get a substitute rental. If you like TV series, you should check out their catalog.

PowerVideo
One of the survivors from the VHS era, they specialize in Hong Kong and Korean TV series. Power Video's rental charges are similar to that of Gramophone. Though not a large DVD collection, they do have some good unique titles. They also rent a very small collection of Blu Ray at $10 per disc. They also buy pre-owned discs from customers at around $10 per DVD. Power Video have been promising customers with an online store but months have passed and it is still "under construction".

LaserFlair
They rent DVDs are at the Bishan Junction 8 and Tampines Mall branch. Laser Flair's titles are limited. Laser Flair have a couple of unique titles but these are mostly from independent studios and most of these titles look like straight to video B titles. Their rental charges are pretty steep $5 for new titles and $4 for catalog DVDs.

Video King
A breakaway group of investors from Video EZY set up Video King in 2009. So you can expect more or less the same store concept as their former company in terms of catalog, store layout, design, location and pricing. Therefore my review of Video EZY sort of applies to Video King as well. Their blu-ray collection does not seem to be on par with the Video EZY but this will probably be rectified with time. Most of their stores are located in the north and west of Singapore. Check out their "video king singapore" facebook site.

Hollywood Clicks

An online DVD company that delivers rented DVDs directly to your home. DVD rentals are at S$41.73 for a 3-Disk Plan (postage is pre-paid by the company). This works out to an average rental of S$2 per disk as it takes 3-5 days to turnaround a new batch of DVDs to your home. This assumes you return (post) the DVDs back to them by the next day. They don't allow you to deliver their disks directly to their office. They don't ship discs on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays which means that you will have less opportunity to maximize your rental turnaround.

Hollywood Click's sign up and booking of DVDs are easy to use but it is not easy to get hold of the more popular titles. Only active accounts can view their full online catalog. This makes it difficult for you to decide if they have sufficient unique DVDs of interest to you to make it worthwhile for you to reactivate your account. Hollywood Click's monthly subscription is automatically renewed via credit card at the end of the 30 day cycle. To cancel the subscription, you need to return all the borrowed discs and cancel your subscription at least 3 days before your next account billing date. The discs come without the original cover inserts. Those interested in trying out their service, to take up their free introductory offer to see if it meets with your satisfaction.

Home Pal

Also an online DVD rental system similar to Hollywood Clicks. Home Pal has greater flexibility in their rental plan options and may be cheaper than Hollywood Clicks for some plans though I've not tested it out. However, you will need to pay a security deposit depending on the DVD rental plan if you don't sign up with your credit card. Unlike Hollywood Clicks, non-active members can peruse a greater number of titles from their online catalog unlike Hollywood Clicks. Also they ship titles on Saturdays. They also have some Blu Ray discs for rental. The discs come without the original cover inserts. Take full advantage of the Home Pal introductory offer.

VideoHub

Also an online DVD rental similar to HomePal and Hollywood Clicks. VideoHub claims to have 10,000 titles but most of them are VCDs, Asian or B movies and they have some lesser known unique titles. The good thing about VideoHub is you can see their whole catalog online before activating your account. However, my complaint about their site is it takes some time for each page to load and there is no synopsis of the titles offered for rental. They offer Blu-Ray rentals - though titles are very limited. Take up their offer for a free one time introductory offer before paying for the full rental service. They accept Pay Pal in addition to credit cards and cheques.
They have a separate brick and mortar store at Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 ( Starlight Vision ) for those who like to browse but don't expect online service there. Their VCD, DVD, Blu-Ray collection is identical to that of their online store, so I suspect that they share their titles for both companies. Many of their titles are Asian TV series and VCD titles.
A lot of their unique titles are from Malaysia (really crappy, like those one-DVD-for-$5 titles) and Hongkong - so don't expect good picture quality DVDs of the movies. Most of the titles are photostat copies of the discs covers which are placed in files. The store looks run down typical of a HDB located shop. Unfortunately, these covers are not filed in alphabetical order like Gramophone nor are the movie descriptions adequate to make facilitate a renting decision.

Video Kiosks:
There are some automated kiosk machines dispensing DVD like PLAY and CineNow. You''ll have to visit their websites to locate the locations of their kiosks. Most of them are in heartlands town centres. Have not tried their services, but the limited range and the difficulty to see what titles are available at the kiosks make it a disadvantage for them. However, in terms of prices, their rental can be quite attractive for people only interested in mainstream movies.

Others Video Rental Companies in Singapore:
I don't think there are any other significant video rental companies. If you have recommendations on other DVD rental libraries, please let me know so I can review them as well.
Can big overseas video rental companies have a viable business in Singapore? Like Netflix or Blockbuster? I don't think so, unless they are prepared to invest big time and are prepared for the long haul like 5-10 years as the BFC licensing costs and discs censorship fees are prohibitive.
However, things are a damn sight better now with the new BFC under MDA management than when stone-age Rama was running the place! Certainly, DVD movie piracy is not so rampant as before because of the film censorship liberalization.
The Singapore censorship laws need to be liberalized further to create a bigger market for video rentals by allowing R21 classification for video products. The R21 classification for DVD video products will certainly bring a lot of economic benefits to the country and is unlikely to cause significant social problems here. If gays can have leeway, why can't adults be allowed to view movies suitable to their age group instead of being forced to watch movies more suitable for kids? After all, there are a lot of more harmful, unregulated stuff easily available on the Internet which every Singaporean have easy, unrestricted access to if they really want it.
What I like / don't like about the DVD / Blu-ray rental system in Singapore:
Likes (Wish List):
  • Incentives to return discs within 1 day - usually cash-back or redemption. This incentive helps the store to make new titles easily available) (Rida)
  • One month (time based) rentals at low cost for brick stores (Gramaphone)
  • Big collection of unique titles and reasonable access (one month timeframe) to these titles
  • Online stores allowing customers to return discs directly to their office for faster turn around (none so far)
  • Better display for quick and effortless retrieval of titles.
  • Transparency. Stores should a list of new titles in a file or clearly put up the DVD boxes so customers know they have. Alternatively, the store could provide a PC to enable customers to quickly see all the titles that are available for rent and which titles are currently available in the store. Nothing fancy, just movie titles, year and genres. These are more to assist regular customers who are familiar with the titles.
  • Premium and standard services ie pay more for unique titles not available elsewhere - while the title is not widely available elsewhere.
  • Provide incentives to renew subscriptions
  • Allow customers to recommend titles (wish list), encourage feedback
  • Availability of free or cheap car parking or easy access by public transport

Dislikes (The Deal Breakers):
  • Penalty for nominal late return of discs ie give folks a one-day grace if they are not serial late-returners (Video EZY and 7 Frames are notorious for such rigid and customer unfriendly practices)
  • Poor display of hot titles or non-availability of full catalog titles prior to sign-up (Gramophone, online rentals)
  • Posting a list of titles which are not actually available for rental (Rida)
  • Unavailability of hot titles over a one month period (online renters)
  • Few new titles added each month (Gramaphone, Laser Flair)
  • Lack of quality unique titles (Video EZY, Video King)
  • Long queues and slow check out (Gramaphone)
  • expensive car parking or out of the way locations (Gramophone)

Until that day, good luck on that perfect video rental!
