Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

The Spiderwick Chronicles is as unimpressive in its story telling and special effects as that of the Golden Compass. The characters too are so detached that it is difficult relate to them. This first installment does not bode well for the future of Spiderwick movie franchise.

Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) movie & DVD review posterThe story, based on the bestselling series of children's fantasy novels by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, is about a family which relocates from New York to the remote New England woods which is teeming with ugly creatures like goblins, boggarts, and ogres. It should have made an exciting tale if not for the poor scripting and bad acting.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is rated PG for scary creature action and violence, peril and some thematic elements. The scary monsters may frighten children too young to differentiate film fantasy from reality. There is one instance of very mild profanity and one other, more serious utterance that gets cut off mid-word.
