Zombieland (2009)

Zombieland (2009)

Zombieland (2009)Zombieland could have been a better movie if the producers had treated the project more like Drag Her To Hell.

What Zombieland lacks is thrills to make it a classic zombie movie though the special effects are up to Hollywood standards. It tries hard to please the American Pie / Road Trip crowd thereby missing the opportunity of creating a truly great horror-comedy movie.

However, the movie did good business in the theaters and has a stellar cast including Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin and so that will count for something for most DVD collectors.

Ninja Assasin [Blu-ray] (2009)

Ninja Assasin [Blu-ray] (2009)

Ninja Assasin [Blu-ray] (2009)Good action-packed martial arts movie starring Korean heart-throb Rain.

Action Fans will thoroughly enjoy this Ninja Assasin from the start to finish about clan warfare involving Euro-Asian gangs. Filmmakers behind The Matrix and V for Vendetta provide novel ways of deadly blood-letting (employing chains, swords, staffs, shuriken) that will satisfy even the most hardcore ninja-samurai fans.

Enjoy slow motion violence on high definition blu-ray.

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)Law Abiding Citizen is a fairly good revenge-prison thriller with Gerard Butler as highly intelligent, tactical killer and Jamie Foxx as the public prosecutor.

The plot is well paced and exciting and would have been a better movie except of the ending. Personally, I felt sorry for the Gerard Butler character as he had been a victim of legal injustice.

All in all, would recommend Law Abiding Citizen to people who like intelligent action-thrillers. Certainly better than most of this genre movies released in 2009.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009)

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009)

DAlvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009)isappointing sequel to the excellent first movie of Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise. It looks like a cheap rip off, made for TV movie.

The characters, including Alvin, are so incredibly irritating, you just want to switch off midway of the movie. Kids too young to think for themselves may like it but are unlikely to go for a second viewing.

Inspite of the inclusion of Spice-munks, it still stinks.

You have been squeaked!

Elwin plays Mr Big Song Video (not from the Chipmunks movie):

Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2008)

Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2008)

Hachi: A Dog's Tale is based on a Japanese movie "Hachiko: A Dog's Tale" - a true story about a faithful dog in Tokyo.

This heartwarming remake, set this time in America, is about a close bond between an Akita dog (Hachi) and his master (Richard Gere). Be prepared for many teary moments that can make even a grown man cry.

One of the better animal-human movies to come out in a long time. Highly recommended even for people who don't really like movies about animals.

Where The Wild Things Are (2009)

Where The Wild Things Are (2009)

Where The Wild Things Are (2009)Muppet like creatures usually don't cut it in movies, with the exception of Yoda in Star Wars. This movie is no exception.

The young audience won't find Where the Wild Things Are particularly interesting or endearing. The characters are not funny or larger than life and the plot does not have a big memorable climax.

It is mostly about big fuzzy cutie muppets who don't do much on screen.

Where the Wild Things Are and The Fantastic Mr Fox proves that what works in children story books may not necessarily spin magic or big bucks on the big screens.

Attack of Leningrad (2009)

Attack of Leningrad (2009)

Attack of Leningrad (2009)Gabriel Byrne (MILLER'S CROSSING), Mira Sorvino (MIGHTY APHRODITE) and ARMIN MUELLER-STAHL headline this tense war drama set during Germany's invasion of Leningrad in 1941.

War-action fans will be disappointed with this movie as it involves mainly non-combatants. The story revolves around the plight of an American journalist (Mira Sorvino) trapped during the intensive Nazi campaign to wipe Leningrad off the face of the earth in which more than one million people (mainly Russians) died.

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2008)

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2008)

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2008)Ill-fated fantasy project starring Heath Ledger, Andrew Garfield, Verne Troyer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law. The involvement of these fine actors do not save this movie.

As usual, director, Terry Gillian (Monty Python) is in his usual misguided and self-indulgent self - delivering a movie that is excruciatingly painful to watch.

Usually films about making a deal with the devil should throw up an interesting plot. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The title itself hints to a kind of pretentious mess that even die hard fans would run away from. Well you have been warned.

Peacock (2010)

Peacock (2010)

Peacock (2010)Like a peacock, Cillian Murphy stars as a split personality character alternating between a detached clerk and caring wife personas. The characters are so uninteresting, you end up not caring what happens to them.

Peacock is a reflection of the Obama era - depression and detachment. Everybody is afraid, backtracking and talking themselves silly like Biden.

For those who want something that is true to the times, go see this movie. Those who want entertainment have to look elsewhere. You won't get it here.

Tenderness (2008)

Tenderness (2008)

Tenderness (2008)Tenderness is a low key love story of a teen serial killer, Eric (Jon Foster, The Informers) . It is not a slasher movie so fans of this genre may be disappointed. In fact, the plot is so slow and low key, it is more of drama than a thriller.

I would rate the movie as a disappointment even with Russell Crowe's involvement in this film production. Crowe has a small role as a detective tracking the killer.

If you like slo-mo dramas with a weird twist in the plot, this one is for you. Don't expect any tenderness in this movie.

Post Grad (2009)

Post Grad (2009)

Post Grad (2009)Alexis Bledel stars as a post grad who goes through a series of misadventures in which she has to choose between a dream job, long-term relationship and an interesting social life.

Post Grad is an ideal chick movie which guys won't mind watching with their GFs. It is funny, true to life and a must watch for anyone looking for a job and ending up with downsized expectations.

Better than average production values makes this one of the better non-blockbuster movies for 2010.

Singapore Boy Guitarist Rocks on Satriani's Love Thing

This Boy Guitarist from Singapore really rocks! Saw him play on YouTube and was absolutely amazed by his matured licks on Joe Satriani's "Love Thing"

Just imaging, he is only 14 years old and been playing the guitar for little more than a year, and shows good skills on the frets.

Watch this 14 year old boy named Elwin Lim rocking on Satriani's Love Thing.

In these tab videos, he provides fingerstyle chord instructions on how to play the songs featured.  While the style looks easy, it takes lots of practice to master the techniques. Particularly, the Paul Gilbert pieces which requires technical skills - some of which are very classically oriented.

Watch out for more video tabs lessons by this talented artiste whom we are likely to hear more of in the years to come.
