Nim's Island (2008)

Nim's Island (2008) Movie Review

If you like fantasy films with a good measure of adventure and comedy thrown in, you will find Nim's Island appealing. Certainly the preteens will enjoy this movie. Nim's friendship with almost talking ( CGI-enhanced) animals like Selkie the sea lion, Galileo the pelican, and Fred the lizard will keep them engrossed.

Nim's Island movie poster | DVD movie review pictureOn Nim's Island, anything can happen. A magical placed ruled by a young girl's (Nim Rusoe played by Abigail Breslin, Academy Award nominee of Little Miss Sunshine) vivid imagination.

Nim's Island is a re-working of the Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson stories told from the view point of a young girl.

Nim lives with her soon-to-be-divorced scientist father, Jack Rusco (300's Gerard Butler), in a remote island in the Pacific. (The movie filmed on the sandy beaches of the Gold Coast and lush tropical rainforests of Hinchinbrook Island,Australia).

Nim is thrilled when she meets her favorite author "Alex Rover" (two time Oscar winner, Jodie Foster) who writes Indiana Jones type stories which Nim feels are perfect embodiment of her father. During a boating research trip to a volcanic island, they are hit by a tidal wave and Nim's dad gets lost at sea.

Nim enlists the help of Alexandra Rover to find Nim's missing-at-sea father and keep invaders off the island. Unfortunately for Nim, Alexandra is more like Howard Hughes than Indiana Jones i.e. she is only comfortable living in the city and fears bugs and diseases. However, with their fates entwined by unforeseen circumstances, they must find strength in each other and they learn valuable life lessons along the way.

Nim's Island is adapted from the popular children's book by Wendy Orr.

Nim's Island Movie Review: Suitable for Children

Rated PG for mild adventure action and brief language makes this movie suitable for all children with some reservations. Adventure sequences may upset small children: such as tiny animals being thrown onto people's faces, vomiting off-screen, farting sea lions, scary tidal wave and monsoon storms. Brief language include several "damns', and "oh my God" and a mock prayer "Please don't take me now".
