Get Smart (2008) Movie Review
Although Get Smart is not really suitable for young kids because of its many adult jokes, the kids in the theater I was in really lapped up the jokes and slapstick humor, silly as it may seem to some adults. Frankly, I thought that Get Smart was one of the better comedies this year.
It would be unfair to compare the movie to the TV series as there are differences in the Maxwell Smart character profile. In the TV series, Maxwell Smart is an incompetant and bungling spy - which tended to get irrating after awhile. In this movie, Smart is rather intelligent and lovable analyst with a knack of being too over confident for his own good.
The movie plot moves at a brisk pace so the movie does not seem draggy. Steve Carell does a great job as Smart - sensitive and funny without being too silly. Anne Hathaway looks good as the more seasoned spy who gets the less experienced Smart out of harm's way. Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson has a small but crucial role as a spy now consigned to admin duties at the Hq.
If you like Steve Carell's dance moves from his previous movies, you get to see him in at least two funny dance sequences in this Get Smart movie.
Get Smart is conditionally suitable for children.
The characters in the movie spews several swear words (no f-word however) and one character makes a rude finger gesture. There is also a scene where Smart appears to be having sex with another man though this is actually not the case. In another scene, a female character is exposed in her underwear and an open robe. There is also a disgusting vomit scene. Violence is cringe-worthy comedy violence with one character getting his head stapled twice.
